Avanta Federal Credit Union (then Laurel
Federal Credit Union) started in 1949 out of
an empty railcar in Laurel, Montana. Several
railroad workers joined together and started
the credit union as a way to safeguard
themselves from the high cost of banking
services. As more people joined, office
space was obtained in the Laurel
Refinery. Years later a permanent office was
built at 220 First Avenue in Laurel. A
second branch in Red Lodge, Montana was
added, and then a third in
Columbus!
Avanta merged with Mountain States
Federal Credit Union and obtained a branch
in Downtown Billings. The incredible growth
of the credit union required additional
space for back office services such as
accounting, collections, a call center and
marketing. With few options available to
expand, the credit union started
construction on a new building on the
West End in Billings. The same year, Avanta
merged with Montana Media Credit Union and
Northwest Humble Credit Union.
Avanta now has five full service branches, a
wide range of products and services and a
nationwide ATM network for our members. Are
